The construction industry is back on track since the Great Recession, and total construction employment has re – bounded to almost 6.7 million workers (still a far cry from its peak of 8 million workers in 2006). “Construction spending in November 2016 hit a 10-year high, with one-month and year-over-year increases in all major segments,” says Ken Simonson, chief economist at Associated General Contractors of America. “Looking ahead, contractors say they expect more work in every category in 2017 than in 2016.” However, despite being about 16% below its 2006 employment peak, the industry is still struggling to find qualified labor. Compounding these statistics, baby boomers are reaching retirement age at a rate of 10,000 per day, while fewer, less experienced workers are moving into the engineering and construction industry. In short, labor has become a key constraint for contractors that want to take on and complete more work.

The Christ Hospital Joint & Spine Center project consisted of 80+ patient bathroom and shower pre-fabricated units (pods) in the south expansion of The Christ Hospital Joint and Spine Center. It included the complete architectural and mechanical systems of the bathrooms. The main driving factor for the decision to use pods was the repetition of the units to achieve a number that would result in significant quality and schedule benefits.

Lend Lease, an international leader in property and infrastructure development and management, became the first public business in 2009 to begin operations under the U.S. Army’s Privatization of Army Lodging program. In the summer of 2013, Lend Lease began planning a new 62,000 square foot, four-story, 95-room Candlewood Suites for transient soldiers and their families at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. During the early stages of the planning, the group identified several ways that it could save time and money on the project. Inspiration came from Lend Lease’s Australian team who in 2012 built the world’s tallest high-rise apartment building made with Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) and modular bathroom PODS.
